imageThis is Ron Schneider, owner of Leon’s Frozen Custard. Today I interviewed him for the Spanish Journal. During the interview I asked Mr. Schneider about his policy. He insisted that the policy was meant to make his business run more efficiently.

“Having my employees speak English ensured fast and steady movement of our product to customers. We have a fast paced business designed to move our products quickly in order to limit the waiting time for our customers. The problem is not all of my employees can speak Spanish”, Schneider said.

Schneider said he currently employees three Hispanics who will now respond in Spanish (starting Thursday) to assist customers ordering in Spanish.

On Thursday Schneider repealed his English Only policy, after social media and mainstream news networks exploded with the news about his English Only policy. The matter came to a head when Spanish speakers attempting to place an order, were told they could not be helped because Leon’s employees were not allowed to speak Spanish to customers.

I asked him about his understanding of Latino culture. He said his wife is part Hispanic and Native American and that he seeks her advise on such matters. “She tells me there is no issue”, said Schneider.
