Hoan Bridge Project Completed
Milwaukee – Governor Scott Walker joined local leaders in Milwaukee today to celebrate both the completion of the Hoan Bridge Project as well as the beginning of the Lakefront Gateway Project. Both of these projects will bolster economic development along Milwaukee’s Lakefront area.
“Investing in our infrastructure remains one of our top priorities,” Governor Walker said. “Projects like the Hoan Bridge and Lakefront Gateway boost economic development in the area. Developing safe and efficient transportation networks is a key element as we continue to help our industries transport their goods from point A to point B, make our numerous tourist destinations throughout the state more accessible, and attract new people and businesses to Wisconsin.”
The Daniel Hoan Bridge is a high-traffic area that connects downtown Milwaukee and Bay View across the Milwaukee River inlet, carrying around 40,000 cars every day. The project worked to reinforce the bridge and ensure safety of commuters by removing and replacing the existing bridge deck, making structural modifications, and cleaning and repainting steel on the bridge. These improvements, which began in 2013, are estimated to lengthen the life span of the bridge until at least 2055.
The Lakefront Gateway Project is a partnership between the State of Wisconsinand the City and County of Milwaukee to redesign the Lincoln Memorial Drive ramps in the I-794 Lake Interchange. The project involves relocating expressway ramps, creating and re-designing streets, making improvements to pedestrian and bicycle connections, and developing new private sector organizations. Ultimately, the Lakefront Gateway Project is projected to increase the number of people living, working, and visiting downtown Milwaukee, and enhance access to Harbor Drive to improve transportation between the Third Ward and Lincoln Memorial Drive.
