Senator tim carpenterMadison — Media networks around the state are reporting on a heated debate between Democrats and Republicans during a Senate session on election bills, which resulted in a charge of racism by Sen. Tim Carpenter who said that Republican Senator Mary Lazich “hates blacks and Latinos.”

Carpenter made the accusation after several elections bills Lazich has sponsored will, in his opinion, limit voting in Milwaukee and other urban areas where many minority voters live.

Lazich responded by objecting vehemently to Carpenter’s charge. The Republican lawmaker said that the bills she is supporting are needed to uphold a fair and accurate elections system.

GOP leaders immediately stood to defend Lazich and demanded an apology from Senator Carpenter for his   “rude and reprehensive” comments.

No response from Carpenter as of press time.
