The Kenosha Unified School Board on Tuesday approved a 4 percent increase in the tax levy for 2018 to help cover a significant drop in state aid.
As certified by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Unified will receive about $150.6 million in equalization aid, less than the $155.1 million received this year.
The district will also receive $1.7 million in high poverty aid because more than half of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Overall, the district will see $152.3 million in general aid, a 2.7 percent decrease.
The district will also carry over about $940,000 from this year’s budget, and $1.4 million of available funds has yet to be allocated.
The board may allocate such funds for student educational support, testing, employee recruitment or retention, and information technology improvements.
