The woman who lived with the man who shot four people on a Menasha bridge before taking his own life says he suffered from depression and was very irrational.

Twenty-four-year-old Haylie Peterson tells Post-Crescent Media she had expressed concern to Sergio Valencia del Toro about his depression before she left their Menasha house Sunday evening. Peterson says she left because they both needed time to process their emotions.

Police have said the two had argued after a recent broken engagement before Valencia del Toro headed to the Fox Cities Trestle Trail bridge and fatally shot Jon Stoffel, his 11-year-old daughter, Olivia, and Adam Bentdahl. Stoffel’s wife, Erin, was wounded by gunshots and is hospitalized in serious condition.
