Milwaukee, WI – On Thursday, April 11, 2019, Robert Matagi was driving a vehicle recklessly, southbound on I-43. He exited I-43 at West Holt Ave., failing to stop at the stop sign and continued westbound on West Morgan Ave. at a high rate of speed. At the intersection of South 13th St. and West Morgan Ave., he proceeded through a red light and crashed into a vehicle traveling southbound on South 13th St. The driver of the vehicle traveling southbound on South 13th St. was Pedro L. Colon-Ortiz. Mr. Colon-Ortiz died at the scene. On Wednesday, August 20, Mr. Matagi, appeared in court. He pled No Contest to the charge of Hit and Run Involving Death, which is a Class D felony and punishable by up to 25 years in prison. The subsequent charges of 2nd Degree Reckless Homicide and Fleeing Causing Death were dismissed but will be read in at sentencing. Mr. Matagi’s sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place on September 25, 2019.
