It’s not clear when the downtown construction project will be completed, but city officials said the end is near.

The months-long reconstruction of Sixth Avenue from 55th Street to Library Park — which started in May and was to be completed by September — still has no end date, with still more work needed.

City staff said weather and unforeseen conditions caused delays.

“The majority of the work is expected to be completed by the end of next week,” said Brian Cater, the city’s deputy director of engineering.

Paving still needs to be completed on 58th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues. There may also be some “minor things” to be fixed in the coming weeks.

The project — which includes new sidewalks, curbs and gutters in addition to a new road surface — has frustrated many area residents and business owners.
