Before school started, Fielkow, 13, sent a letter to her friends and family members explaining her involvement with Books for Kids and asked them to donate books as part of her bat mitzvah project. Sammy will bring the books to Next Door, 2545 N. 29th Street, on Friday.
But that’s not all the Bayside Middle-Schooler has done for Books for Kids and the children served by Next Door. Prompted by advice from Rabbi Shari Shamah, Family Specialist at the Jewish Community Center, Sammy became a dedicated volunteer over the summer.
“Sammy helped in our Kindergarten-Kamp and here at Books for Kids,” said Books for Kids Coordinator Pam Edyburn. “Her book drive letter was so wonderful and kind. She is an awesome, mature teenager. It was a pleasure having her here.”
Sammy loves working with the kids most of all. “I love their smiles and I like to ask them what they’re learning about when we read together,” she said. “I know they are glad to see me when I come – and I am glad to see them.”
