A home on Kenosha’s south side was damaged by a fire that may have been caused by an unattended candle.

The Kenosha Fire Department was called to the two-story home, 3915 83rd St., at about 12:25 p.m. Two people who lived in the house were home, but were able to get out of the house before firefighters arrived.

“There was a significant fire in the basement,” said Battalion Chief Ken Schroeder.

He said the fire was contained to the basement, but said there was significant fire and smoke damage to the basement and extensive smoke damage on the first and second floors of the house. “There was too much damage to the house for the residents to safely live there” until repairs can be made, he said.
