Madison- Opposing camps clashed on Wednesday at the Capitol over Republican-backed mining legislation that could open the door to a massive iron ore mine in Ashland and Iron counties. Backers of the legislation touted the economics of a mine and said that environmental safeguards have been built in to a bill unveiled a week ago. But opponents said it would weaken protections, especially for wetlands, groundwater and some surface water.

Mining has been hotly debated for more than a year after Gogebic Taconite proposed constructing a massive iron ore mine over 4 miles in Ashland and Iron counties.
